Adventures with Postpartum Depression A Memoir
Beschreibung
After the birth of her first child, Courtney Novak was blindsided by postpartum depression. Her maternal mental illness started with a pervasive sense of guilt and quickly morphed into anxiety, insomnia and neurotic behaviors like checking to make sure her baby was still breathing dozens of times each night. When she started having dark intrusive thoughts of throwing her daughter, she finally asked for help. This memoir describes Novak’s descent into the darkness of depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder; chronicles the four days she spent in a hospital's psychiatric unit; and details her road to recovery. As part of her recovery, Novak worked with a cognitive behavioral psychologist to dismantle the anxiety that had been ruling her life. Along the way, she adjusted to her new life as a stay-at-home mom and conquered the shame of having a mental illness. Less than a year after being diagnosed, Novak realized that having postpartum depression was actually one of the best experiences of her life.
